Building a Forever Estate (Rob Dydrek style)

Not many people have the luxury of building a multimillion dollar estate, but Rob Dydrek, the pro skater turned business mogul, has given families a new perspective on the meaning of a “forever estate.”

What is a forever estate?

It’s not too far off from family cottage planning, or the idea of creating a multigenerational home that your kids, grandkids, and great grandkids can use as a gathering place for special family occasions or vacations - the only major difference is your level of commitment and vision.

You may have heard of this concept before with the Kennedy Compound.

But unlike the Kennedy Compound, which evolved over generations, Rob Dydrek spent over 80% of his wealth on buying just the land back in 2014. Almost a decade later he’s still working on the plans to construct the perfect home to build on that land.

Why would a person do that?

It’s simple - he’s extremely long term minded. At 49 years old and focused on longevity, he plans to use the home himself for at least 60 years, and then his family will ideally use it forever (that’s why he named it “Forever Estates”).

And he’s not the only one doing this - development companies are forming to capitalize on this new trend common among visionaries.

So what does all this have to do with your estate planning?

Estate planning is about protecting your family’s future. Even if you have a relatively simple estate consisting of a modest home and some retirement accounts, the same set of questions apply to you: “what do you want to be remembered by?” and “how can you leave your kids better off?” Not just in terms of material possessions and money, but in terms of creating lasting family values and a common purpose to live by.

Your estate plan is your opportunity to clarify what’s most important to you, and the message you want to convey to your children and descendants for generations to come.
